It is winter here in Colorado, which means bright blue skies behind snow-covered mountains. The days are short so we celebrate the solstice to joyfully anticipate every added minute of light. But this too will pass, and a colorful new season will come to life. I’ll go from trying to stay warm by the woodstove to exploring the great outdoors.
In 2025 we’ll take a seasonal journey on Substack too. In the winter months of January, February, and March we will focus on planning, and in the spring months of April, May, and June we will focus on doing.
Here is the editorial calendar for the first half of 2025:
Plan your study
January: Find questions: What problem merits an online qualitative study?
February: Choose online methods: What options fit the problem?
March: Address ethical dilemmas: How can I be a respectful and responsible scholar?
Do your research
April: Conduct interviews: How can I interact with participants online?
May: Conduct focus groups: How can I facilitate group interactions online?
June: Reflect on experiences: How can I keep a research journal?
I’ll publish an editorial calendar for the second half of the year, so feel free to comment with topics you hope I will cover! I’ll also start planning interactive events for paid subscribers (don’t worry, the newsletter will always be free.)
Welcome new subscribers!
I hope you will find useful ideas and resources in this free monthly newsletter (with occasional follow-up posts.) When the Field is Online focuses on qualitative research in a connected world, and ways to share what we learn to make the world a better place. Feel free to comment or message me if you have suggestions or resources to share. If you missed earlier issues, all the newsletters are archived here.
